March 10, 2015 - TRYNESS MBALE, Lusaka. GOVERNMENT and the private sector have launched the Zambia Green Building Association (ZGBA) to develop a construction sector that promotes new technologies.
The objective of ZGBA is to promote and advance the greening of the Zambian construction industry.
Green building and construction refers to housing which is energy and resources efficient, while at the same time improve the quality of living for those occupying the buildings.
According to a statement availed to the Daily Mail recently by the Association of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors (ABCEC), the concept is to encourage the industry to use locally-made materials and home-grown technologies.
"Government and the private sector have established ZGBA. Once up and running, ZGBA will play an important role in pushing Zambia's green building and construction agenda forward," the statement reads.
The promotion of green buildings will also benefit the environment and lead to significant job creation throughout the local value-chain.
The mandate and objective of the ZGBA was subject of a one-day consultative conference initiated by the National Council for Construction, the National Association of Medium and Small-Scale Contractors, and ABCEC, in partnership with the Zambia Green Jobs Programme.
Some of the participants of the conference were property developers, financial service providers, contractors, architects, Government institutions and agencies who exchanged ideas on how to promote and push forward the greening of the Zambian building construction industry.
