Sustainable Housing Guidelines for greener communities officially launched
Kitwe - On Wednesday November 23rd Hon. Vincent Mwale, Minister of Local Government successfully launched the Sustainable Housing Guidelines and reiterated government commitment to the sustainable development agenda.
The launch took place during the Annual General Meeting and first Planning Conference for the Zambia Institute of Planners (ZIP) at the Moba Hotel in Kitwe. The theme of the event was "Towards Sustainable, Just and Greener Communities: The Role of Professional Planners".
Opening the event, His Worship Mr Christopher Kang'ombe, the Mayor of Kitwe, encouraged cities and city planners to take centre stage in implementing the sustainable development agenda and the creation of greener cities while referring to the recently held COP 22 in Morocco and the Paris Climate Agreement.
In his remark, ZIP President Mr. Cooper Chiboma reiterated the importance of planning in carrying out sustainable development and emphasized the importance of collectiveness in fighting climate change.
Speaking on behalf of Mr. Alexio Musindo, ILO Director for Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique, Mr. Tapera Muzira underlined the importance of a sound and enabling regulatory framework supported by capacitated and enthusiastic professionals for the building construction sector to reach its potential for inclusive green growth and job creation with the Sustainable Housing Guidelines one part of creating this framework, creating a platform for green reform in the way buildings are designed and constructed.
In his speech, Hon. Mwale underlined the need for sustainable construction in the built environment for climate change mitigation and called for the proper organization of urban planners in achieving this. He further emphasized that it is crucial to make the most of local resources when developing Zambia. He also encouraged to ensure that all new infrastructure meet all the requirements of the Sustainable Housing Guidelines". He further acknowledged and expressed gratitude to the support of the Government of Finland and the UN system in the development of the Sustainable Housing Guidelines.
Also present at the event were His Worship Mr. Chisenga, the Mayor of Ndola, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Local Government Mr. Amos Malupenga, representation from the Zambia Institute of Architects , Engineering Institute of Zambia, the academia and other senior government officials.
The Sustainable Housing Guidelines are a part of the policy update and review work of the collaboration between the Government of Zambia and the ILO-led Zambia Green Jobs Programme, a joint UN private sector development programme funded by the Government of Finland. With the Guidelines mainstreamed into the national planning and development processes, they will provide incitement and details on how sustainability can be integrated into national housing development, planning and management. Furthermore, the guidelines are designed to support housing development that not only responds to climate change challenges, but to local sustainable development priorities in an integrated manner. In short the guidelines will officially be made available to the public online.
